We really enjoyed the Anahinga trail from Royal Palm. We have a 3 year old and it was nearly the perfect hike for him (although check my pics for a moment of 3 year old dramatics about being tired!) The boardwalk is packed with so much wildlife, it was crazy. We saw Alligators, turtles, Florida Gar fish, purple Gallinule, Anahinga birds, Great Blue Heron, and a snake. At any point you can stop and look over the side and see so many fish! It was a little nerve wracking how close the alligators were, but we kept our distance and it was fine. If you can only do one thing in the Everglades, come here and do the Anahinga trail!
If you only had an hour in the Everglades, this is your stop. Anhinga trail has the most wildlife packed in a 3/4 mile loop. We saw gators, up close, two types of turtles, numerous birds playing feet’s from you. The Gumbo Limbo trail is fine but could skip and not miss anything.
Many volunteers when we stopped gave amazing insights on the animals. There are bathrooms and water next to the visitor center, which we didn’t go into.
Really nice ponds and trails. If you want shade and more natural hike, take the Gumbo Limbo trail. You may see some animals but you may not. When it's windy it is pretty nice and not too hot
Perfect place to stop for experiencing wildlife up close.
The Visitor Center has restrooms, a small gift shop, vending and areas for sitting.
But the best part is The Anhinga Trail. Every time I've visited here there have been alligators and anhinga birds within feet of the trail.
The Anhinga Trail is paved/boardwalk and easily accessible. Someone on our guided tour had a roller-walker. You can do this at your own pace, but we happened upon a free, ranger-lead tour that was already in progress, so we followed along, learning more than if we had done it alone.
The second trail from this visitor center is the Gumbo Limbo Trail, a paved trail through woods, quite different from the boardwalk.
Each trail is less than a mile: Anhinga 0.8; Gumbo Limbo 0.5, but the Gumbo Limbo seemed to take longer. My thought is that there were no diversions of "looking for gators" in the woods to make time fly. The Anhinga Trail can also get hot, as you are in sun the entire walk; Gumbo Limbo is shaded. Remember to take water with you; stay hydrated.
Great little visitor center with a small gift shop with snacks and souvenirs. The trails are very nice to walk above the waters. Lots of life around and excellent picture spots.
